DORCHESTER, Boston.- A man was wounded in a shooting in Dorchester early Saturday morning, and two suspects were arrested after officers pursued them from the area, police said.
The shooting happened at about 2:55 a.m. on Aug. 29 near Westview Street. Officers responding to reports of gunfire found an adult man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Before the shooting, officers had been following two people riding a moped near Blue Hill Avenue and Washington Street. The operator allegedly failed to stop at multiple red lights.
Officers later caught up with the moped near Woodrow Avenue and Milton Avenue. As the operator attempted to turn onto Milton Avenue, the moped collided with a department vehicle and became entangled with it.
Both occupants got off the moped and ran, leading to a foot pursuit.
During the pursuit, officers said the first suspect reached into his waistband, removed a firearm and threw it onto the roof of a building at 6 Milton Ave. Officers later arrested him and seized a .40-caliber Glock 27.
The second suspect also attempted to flee but fell to the ground. A struggle followed, during which officers seized a Glock 19 from his waistband.
The suspects were identified as 18-year-old Ariel Alexander Baez-Lora of Hyde Park and 30-year-old Jamari Owens of Jamaica Plain. Both are expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court.
Baez-Lora faces charges including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, carrying a firearm without a license, a firearm offense involving a prior violent or drug crime, possession of ammunition without an FID card, and possession of a large-capacity feeding device.
Owens faces charges including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, carrying a firearm without a license as a third offense, a firearm offense involving two prior violent or drug crimes, possession of ammunition without an FID card, resisting arrest, failure to stop or yield, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.
