DORCHESTER, Boston.- Two people were arrested after a ShotSpotter alert in Dorchester led to a police chase, a vehicle crash and the seizure of a firearm on Wednesday, Aug. 19.
Police responded at about 3:14 p.m. to the area of 719 Washington St. after the alert. Additional officers, including members of SWAT, the K-9 unit and the Youth Violence Strike Force, also responded.
Officers found evidence of gunfire near Roslin Street, which intersects with Washington Street. Detectives processed the area, and police sent descriptions of the suspects and a vehicle involved in the incident to officers in the area.
A vehicle matching the description was spotted traveling on Washington Street toward Melville Street. Police said the vehicle sped away from officers and was last seen near Waldeck Street.
Officers searching the area later saw one of the suspects running through backyards on Tonawanda Street. A foot chase followed, and the suspect jumped a fence into the backyard of a home on Tonawanda Street before being arrested.
Two officers suffered minor injuries during the arrest and were taken to local hospitals. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Meanwhile, members of the Youth Violence Strike Force saw the fleeing vehicle crash at the intersection of Tonawanda and Greenbrier streets. Officers removed the driver from the vehicle and arrested him. He was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Police K-9 teams searched the route taken by the fleeing suspect and found a Glock 27 handgun in the backyard of a home on Tonawanda Street. Police said the gun had a magazine capable of holding 22 rounds of ammunition.
Detectives also determined that the vehicle’s license plates had been reported stolen.
Seth Porong, 19, of Brighton, is expected to be arraigned in Dorchester District Court on charges including reckless driving, receiving stolen property, receiving a stolen motor vehicle and driving with a suspended license.
A 16-year-old boy is expected to be arraigned in Boston Juvenile Court on allegations including illegal possession of a firearm, possession of a large-capacity magazine and trespassing.
Police said the teenager also had multiple outstanding warrants related to allegations of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, larceny over $1,200 and firearm offenses.
