BRIGHTON, Boston.- A skimming device was found on an ATM inside a 7-Eleven in Brighton, prompting Boston Police to warn the public about the risk of card theft.
According to police, officers from District D-14, which covers Allston and Brighton, responded to the 7-Eleven at 241 Market Street on August 13 after the device was discovered while the ATM was being serviced.
Skimming devices are used to steal card information and PINs. According to police, criminals can hide the devices inside card readers or use small cameras near the keypad to record PIN entries.
Police recommend checking ATMs and payment terminals for signs of tampering, including loose parts, unusual card slots, small holes near the keypad or missing decals.
Consumers should also cover their PIN when entering it, use contactless or chip-enabled payments when possible, and monitor their accounts for unauthorized transactions.
Anyone who believes their card information may have been compromised should contact their card issuer immediately, deactivate the card and request a replacement with a new PIN.
Businesses that discover a suspicious device should take the machine out of service and contact police. According to police, businesses should not attempt to remove the device themselves.
