JAMAICA PLAIN, Boston.- A 14-year-old boy was arrested after Boston police said they seized a loaded handgun from his waistband during a traffic stop in Jamaica Plain on Thursday.
According to police, members of the Youth Violence Strike Force were conducting an ongoing investigation when they received information that the teenager was in possession of a firearm. At about noon on August 6, officers said they observed the suspect leave his residence and enter a vehicle.
Police said the vehicle traveled on Chestnut Street, turned onto Green Street and then onto Centre Street. Officers activated their emergency equipment and stopped the vehicle near 612 Centre St.
According to police, officers approached the vehicle and noticed the teenager breathing heavily. Officers ordered him to exit the vehicle, and police said he complied.
Police said officers then seized a firearm from the left side of the teenager’s waistband and took him into custody. The driver of the vehicle was identified and released at the scene.
According to police, the firearm was a Charter Arms .38 Special Undercover handgun loaded with four rounds of live ammunition.
Police said a brief struggle occurred during the booking process when officers attempted to retrieve the teenager’s cellphone. According to the police account, the teenager pushed an officer before officers regained control of him. Police said the teenager eventually calmed down.
The teenager, who police identified as being from Jamaica Plain, is expected to be arraigned in West Roxbury District Court. He faces charges of delinquency to wit: carrying a loaded firearm without a license, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without an FID card, assault and battery on a police officer, and vandalism.
