DORCHESTER, Boston.- Flags honoring Dorchester veterans were removed from the Dorchester Vietnam Veterans Memorial after an individual cut the ropes securing them during an overnight act of vandalism, according to memorial officials.
The vandalism occurred at approximately 12:07 a.m. on Tuesday, August 4. The University of Massachusetts Police Department reviewed security camera footage and determined that the flags were intentionally removed.
The incident came after community members reached out to memorial officials asking why the flags were missing. Officials said the removed flags represent symbols of honor, sacrifice, and remembrance for Dorchester residents who served in the Vietnam War.
Memorial representatives described the vandalism as a disrespectful act against a site dedicated to honoring veterans and said efforts are underway to replace the flags and ropes and restore the memorial.
The Dorchester Vietnam Veterans Memorial thanked the UMass Police Department for its response and continued investigation.
Officials are asking anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident or who may have information that could help identify the person or people responsible to contact the UMass Police Department. They encouraged community members to share information that could assist investigators.
