DORCHESTER, Boston.- A two-alarm fire that caused a roof collapse displaced 11 residents and sent one child to a hospital Sunday morning after breaking out at a residential building in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood.
Firefighters responded at approximately 8:45 a.m. on Sunday, July 5, to 26 Schuyler St. in Dorchester, where they found heavy fire showing from the building. The structure was evacuated, and a second alarm was struck as crews worked to contain the blaze.
During firefighting operations, the building’s roof collapsed, prompting incident commanders to establish a collapse zone around the structure. Firefighters conducted exterior operations after conditions made the roof inaccessible from inside the building. Ladder companies applied water from above to suppress the remaining fire.
As conditions improved, second-alarm companies were released from the scene while first-due fire companies remained to pack up equipment. Detail companies stayed behind to monitor the building for hotspots.
Boston fire officials said 11 people were displaced by the fire. One child was transported by Boston Emergency Medical Services to a hospital. The child’s condition was not immediately released.
Deputy Chief Doherty and District Chief Carey briefed reporters at the scene. The Boston Fire Department’s Fire Investigation Unit remained on site to determine the cause of the fire, while the American Red Cross provided emergency assistance to displaced residents.
The Boston Fire Department initially identified the incident location as 1 Maple St. in its public updates. However, based on the scene and photographic evidence, the fire occurred at 26 Schuyler St. in Dorchester, and the Maple Street reference appears to have been an address mix-up.
