A Dorchester teenager was ordered held without bail after being charged in connection with a Mother’s Day double shooting in Boston that left his girlfriend’s mother and a 42-year-old man injured on Kingsdale Street, authorities said.
The defendant, identified as 18-year-old Jaynell Sumler, was arraigned Wednesday in Dorchester Municipal Court. Judge Nicholas Brandt ordered Sumler held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for May 21, according to Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden.
Sumler faces two counts of assault with intent to murder, along with charges of possession of a firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without an FID card, and discharge of a firearm into a building.
Authorities said the shooting occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m. on Sunday, May 10, 2026, inside a residence at 69 Kingsdale Street.
Prosecutors allege Sumler shot a 42-year-old woman in the head and then shot a 42-year-old man in the arm and leg. Both victims were transported to local hospitals. The female victim sustained life-threatening injuries, officials said.
Witnesses identified Sumler as the shooter and stated he was the boyfriend of the female victim’s daughter.
A warrant was issued for Sumler the following day. Police arrested him on Wednesday.
Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden said the timing of the violence on Mother’s Day added to the severity of the case and supported the court’s decision to hold the defendant without bail pending further proceedings.
