Dorchester natives Denise and Bill Richard were recognized by the Boston Celtics as “Heroes Among Us” during the team’s April 5, 2026 home game against the Toronto Raptors, honoring their continued community leadership following the loss of their son in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.
The Richards have led ongoing efforts through the Martin Richard Foundation, which has directed more than $10 million toward programs focused on inclusion, youth development, and leadership. Their work is inspired by their son Martin’s handwritten message, “No more hurting people. Peace,” which became a guiding principle for the foundation’s mission.
Alongside their children, Henry and Jane, the Richards have also expanded that vision through The FieldHouse+, a Boston-based space designed to provide young people with opportunities centered on sportsmanship, connection, and belonging.
The recognition came as part of the Celtics’ long-running Heroes Among Us program, which honors individuals who have made lasting contributions to their communities. Established in 1997, the initiative highlights local residents whose work has had a meaningful impact across Greater Boston.
