Firefighters responded around 1:30 a.m. to a fire at Boston Medical Center Brighton, where flames were found in an electrical room, prompting a second alarm response.
According to the Fire Department, crews quickly extinguished the fire but were met with heavy smoke conditions throughout the building. Firefighters deployed multiple fans to clear smoke and ventilated the structure through a pressurized stairwell leading to a roof skylight.
As conditions were stabilized, firefighters coordinated with Boston EMS and hospital staff to evacuate patients from the facility. Several patients were carried down stairwells using basket stretchers and transported by ambulance.
Officials reported that more than two dozen patients were evacuated during the incident. Boston Fire Department Chief of Operations Patrick Ellis briefed the media on the response, describing it as a three-alarm fire with a coordinated evacuation effort.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
