A three-alarm fire broke out Monday afternoon at a residential building on Wilmore Street in the Mattapan neighborhood of Boston, displacing 12 residents and injuring one firefighter.
According to the Boston Fire Department, crews responded around 1:30 p.m. to reports of heavy fire in the rear of a building at 7 Wilmore Street. Upon arrival, firefighters observed flames on the second and third floors. The fire quickly escalated to three alarms as crews worked to contain the blaze.
Shortly after the initial response, thick black smoke was seen venting through the roof as the fire intensified.
By approximately 2:10 p.m., firefighters had knocked down the heavy fire. Crews remained on scene to check for extension and extinguish hot spots in the eaves.
Fire Commissioner Paul F. Burke told reporters that seven adults and five children were displaced by the fire. One firefighter sustained injuries during the response.
Damage to the building is estimated to exceed $750,000.
Investigators with the Boston Fire Department Fire Investigation Unit are working to determine the cause of the fire, while additional companies remained on scene to monitor remaining hot spots.
The American Red Cross of Massachusetts responded to assist displaced residents and pets. Fire apparatus assigned to rehabilitation operations also supported crews during the extended three-alarm response.
