A three-alarm fire tore through a three-family home in Dorchester Friday night, drawing a large response from the Boston Fire Department and sending flames through the roof of the building.

More than 80 firefighters responded to the fire at 20 Normandy Street, deploying over 1,000 feet of hose lines and positioning multiple ground and aerial ladders around the structure. Crews went through dozens of air bottles while battling heavy smoke and intense fire conditions. Fire officials said the coordinated response prevented the blaze from spreading to adjacent homes.

The fire was reported around 8 p.m. on December 12. According to the Boston Fire Department, heavy fire was visible on arrival, and conditions escalated quickly, leading officials to strike a third alarm.

Firefighters soon launched an aggressive interior and exterior attack, focusing on containing the fire and protecting nearby buildings in the densely built neighborhood.

Within a short time, crews reported that the bulk of the fire had been knocked down. Firefighters then began extensive overhaul operations to extinguish remaining hot spots and check for hidden fire.

Deputy Chief Brian Tully briefed the media later in the evening, confirming that no injuries were reported. Fire officials said the sole resident of the building was not home at the time of the fire.

The Boston Fire Department Fire Investigation Unit is investigating to determine the cause of the fire.
