Spooky Streets grant in Boston now accepting applications until September 22

Boston residents and community groups can now apply for the Spooky Streets Grant Program, which provides $300 mini-grants to help fund Halloween and fall-themed block parties. The grants can be used to purchase items such as candy, pumpkins, decorations, and face paint, making it easier for neighborhoods to host free, family-friendly events.

The program is managed by the City’s Office of Civic Organizing and is part of broader City efforts to support safe, engaging activities for children and families while fostering community connections.

Last year, the City’s Block Party Grant Program awarded 110 grants totaling $61,700 across 18 neighborhoods, with additional funding from The Cummings Foundation to support community events. The Spooky Streets program aims to expand this reach, allowing residents to create festive, traffic-free block parties during the fall season.

Eligible block parties must be free and open to the public, take place on a public street, and occur between Friday, October 24, and Sunday, November 2. Parties do not have to be Halloween-themed. Residents must first apply for a Play Street Closing Permit before applying for the $300 mini-grant.

The City, in partnership with the Office of New Urban Mechanics, has streamlined the block party permit process and expanded allowable activities without additional permits, including potluck food, tables, chairs, and small tents. A Block Party Planning Guide is available to assist residents in organizing events.

The deadline to apply for the Spooky Streets grant is Monday, September 22, at 5:00 p.m. Applications and additional information are available at boston.gov/spooky-streets.
