On September 11, 2025, UMass Boston issued a series of emergency alerts beginning shortly after 3:40 p.m., warning of police incidents and public safety threats at multiple campus locations, including the Residence Hall East Building, the Edward M. Kennedy Institute (EMKI), and the Campus Center.
Minutes later, the Massachusetts State Police confirmed troopers had responded to the campus for an unconfirmed report of a shooting. Officials said they were coordinating with university leaders to ensure the safety of students, faculty, and staff.
Shortly after, he university announced all evening classes and activities were canceled as the investigation continued.
At 5:10 p.m., UMass Boston issued an “all clear” alert, reporting that police had determined there was no ongoing threat to the community.
The Massachusetts State Police stated that law enforcement would continue to investigate the incident and encouraged anyone with relevant information to report it to police. Officials also reminded the public to call 911 if they observe any suspicious activity.
