The Christopher Columbus monument located on Waltham Common was defaced with red paint sometime between Thursday night and early Friday morning. The Italian American Alliance reported the incident, highlighting that the statue has been vandalized multiple times since 2018.
The monument was erected in 1992 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus’s arrival in the New World. Following the latest act of vandalism, the statue has already undergone partial cleaning.
In response to the defacement, the Italian American Alliance condemned the act and urged communities to remain vigilant against further incidents. The organization, which aims to promote Italian heritage and the legacy of Columbus, emphasized its opposition to discrimination and its commitment to inclusivity, welcoming individuals of all races, ethnic backgrounds, and faiths.
