Another Walgreens store in Dorchester is shutting its doors for good. The location at 585 Washington Street in Codman Square will close permanently on Sept. 10, according to a letter sent to pharmacy customers and a notice posted online.
The closure marks the latest in a wave of local and national shutdowns by the pharmacy giant.
Walgreens has advised customers of the Codman Square location to transfer their prescriptions to nearby stores, including those on Morton Street in Mattapan and Dorchester Avenue near Savin Hill.
This latest closure follows the April shutdown of the Walgreens at 757 Gallivan Boulevard, also in Dorchester. That location was among the first local casualties of Walgreens’ broader “footprint optimization program,” announced during the company’s October 2024 earnings call. The program is expected to result in the closure of approximately 1,200 stores nationwide over three years, with around 500 targeted for shutdown in fiscal year 2025.
Despite the closures, Walgreens has emphasized that patients will continue to have access to pharmacy services. Prescription transfers can be arranged at nearby locations or managed through the company’s online portal.
