In tribute to Pope Francis, flags across Massachusetts, including all Boston Police Department facilities, have been lowered to half-staff. This gesture of respect follows his death on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, and will remain in effect until sunset on Saturday, April 26, the day of his interment in Rome.
Pope Francis, 88, passed away at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta. Cardinal Kevin Farrell announced his death, remembering the Pope’s dedication to the poor and his deep commitment to the Gospel.
Archbishop Richard Henning of Boston honored the Pope’s legacy, saying:
“His legacy as Holy Father is broad and deep… His example remains a guiding light to the Universal Church.”
The Pope’s body will lie in state at St. Peter’s Basilica starting April 23, with funeral arrangements following revised rites he approved in 2024, focused on simplicity and faith in the Resurrection. The City of Boston joins the world in mourning a Pope who led with mercy, humility, and compassion.
