Dorchester resident and Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson was arrested early Friday on federal charges of wire fraud and theft related to programs receiving federal funds. Fernandes Anderson, who represents District 7, declined to comment earlier this week regarding a federal investigation.
In 2023, she admitted to ethics violations for hiring her sister and son to city positions with salaries of up to $70,000, paying a $5,000 fine. Her campaign has also faced scrutiny for late filings and exceeding contribution limits.
Fernandes Anderson, a foster mother to 17 children and a practicing Sunni Muslim, has served on the Boston City Council since 2021. A press conference by the U.S. Attorney’s Office is expected to provide further details on the charges.
