Dorchester beaches at Savin Hill and Tenean Beach have been temporarily closed due to the presence of bacteria, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH).
The Interactive Beach Water Quality Dashboard, maintained by MDPH, reports that over fifteen beaches across the state are currently shut down.
The specific bacteria affecting the Dorchester beaches is Enterococci, a bacteria that lives in the intestinal tracts of warm-blooded animals, including humans, and therefore indicates possible contamination by fecal waste.
If a beach is listed as closed, visitors are advised not to swim or enter its waters to avoid the risk of illness.
