This Saturday morning, June 15, the Dorchester Historical Society will host a Walking Tour of Port Norfolk.
The tour, expected to last around 90 minutes, will be led by President Earl Taylor. Participants will meet at the Pavilion at Venezia Restaurant, 20 Ericsson Street, Dorchester, MA 02122. The event starts at 10:00 AM and is free and open to all. It’s best to wear walking shoes as the route includes a bumpy street.
According to the Dorchester Historical Society, in the 17th century, what we now know as Port Norfolk was referred to as Pine Neck. Its transformation began with the advent of the Old Colony Railroad in 1844, marking a significant chapter in its history. This development brought a surge of businesses, including notable establishments like the A.T. Stearns Lumber Co., Putnam Nail Co., and Dorchester Mutual Fire Insurance Co.
The Dorchester Historical Society, established in 1843 and incorporated in 1891, focuses on collecting, preserving, and sharing knowledge about the history of the Town of Dorchester (founded in 1630), which became part of the City of Boston in 1870.
