Three three-decker buildings located on Irma Street were destroyed by fire, resulting in the displacement of 30 residents | Photo: Boston Fire DepartmentToday, August 7, 2023, the Boston Fire Department confronted a heavy fire that resulted in the total loss of three triple-decker buildings situated on Irma Street in Dorchester.
The fire began at 20 Irma Street around 2:30 p.m., then spread to the nearby buildings at 16 and 24, causing the situation to escalate. By 2:40 p.m., a 4th alarm was ordered.
Firefighters worked hard from inside and outside the buildings to control the fire, surrounding all three buildings.
Following successful containment around 3:05 p.m., firefighters searched lingering hotspots.
In conversation with the press, Boston’s Fire Commissioner Burke explained that the fire seemed to have started in the basement of the building at 20 Irma Street. It then spread through the back, broke the roof, and extended to two neighboring buildings. All three buildings were destroyed, as the commissioner said.
During the operation, three firefighters were injured, and 30 residents are now displaced from their homes. The Red Cross of Massachusetts is helping them.
