On April 4, 2023, a building fire broke out at 105 Cushing Avenue in Dorchester, which resulted in 21 residents being displaced.
The Boston Fire Department quickly responded to the scene around 1:15 pm and a 2nd alarm was ordered due to a fire in the basement and heavy smoke conditions throughout the building.
The Fire Department ordered a 3rd alarm at around 1:40 pm. The situation was becoming more dangerous by the minute, and at around 2:00 pm, the Fire agency stated that the fire had burned through the roof of the building.
The Fire Department used a drone to assess the situation, which showed that the overhead fire was traveling across the roof. Fire Commissioner Paul Burke was in command and ordered a 4th alarm in response to the escalating situation. The firefighters continued to battle the flames and were eventually able to extinguish the fire.
After the fire was knocked down, Commissioner Burke stated that the home was a total loss. He argued that the fire was difficult to fight because of the roof lines and the fact that it was an old structure. Unfortunately, one firefighter was injured and taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Commissioner Burke also revealed that 12 adults and 9 children had been displaced by the fire. They were taken care of by the Red Cross of Massachusetts, which is providing housing assistance. The cause of the fire is still unknown, and an investigation is currently underway.
