The Seal of the Town of DorchesterThe former Town of Dorchester, which nowadays is the largest and most diverse neighborhood in New England, was founded in 1630, months before the Town of Boston became a City.
On January 3, 1870, Dorchester was formally annexed to Boston, following a referendum held on June 22, 1869.
The original Town of Dorchester also ceded territory to Quincy, and what now are Hyde Park, Milton, and Stoughton.
It was here, in Dorchester, where a traditional town meeting was held for the first time in America.
