Bruce Seals during his time at the Italian Basketball League | Photo by Augusto OssolaBruce Seals, former ABA, and NBA player, and more recently athletic director of the Dorchester Boys and Girls Club (DBGC), died on December 15, 2020. He passed at 67 years old after battling cancer.
Born on June 18, 1953, in New Orleans (Louisiana) Seals is survived by two children, Bruce Jr., and Denitra; a brother Barry and sisters Lori and Rhonda. His wife, Shirley, died in 2005.
Seals was first drafted in 1973 by the Utah Stars. He played two seasons in the American Basketball Association (ABA) before being picked in the second round of the 1975 NBA draft by the Seattle SuperSonics. He played three seasons in the NBA. In 1978 he retired from the NBA and started a career with the Italian basketball league.
In 1990, Seals and his family moved to Boston and started his role as Athletic Director of the DBGC. Position held until his death.
Several organizations, elected officials, and personalities shared their grievances in social media, and the Dorchester Boys and Girls Club created the Bruce Seals Memorial Fund to further support his legacy in the organization.
“Bruce’s legacy is deeply reflected in the deeds and accomplishments of all those he has touched. He was a friend, a role model, and mentor to so many of our members and will be missed more than words can say,” the DBGC said in a statement.
