Mother’s Day Walk for Peace will be held “socially distant” due to the pandemic

The traditional Mother’s Day Walk for Peace will arrive at its 24th annual edition this Sunday with a non-traditional format due to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.

The walk unites thousands of advocates, families, and community members who want to create peaceful neighborhoods and demand justice for families affected by murder. All the profits from the event go to support Dorchester Louis D. Brown Peace Institute’s services, advocacy, and training.

Following the CDC guidelines to prevent COVID-19 infections, this year Mother’s Day Walk for Peace will take place as a virtual walkathon. Participants may walk from their location as individuals or in small groups.

Anyone unable to participate in the walk could also support the institute with a donation. Registration is $20 per person, however, no one will be turned away for lack of funds. The institute’s goal is to raise $400,000.

The event will be held on Sunday, May 10th, 2020, starting at 9:00 AM. The Louis D. Brown Peace Institute will stream it on its website.

The Mother’s Day Walk for Peace started in 1996 and it is organized by the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute, a Dorchester organization founded by Chaplain Clementina (Tina) Chéry after losing her 15-year-old son Louis D. Brown to gun violence in 1993.

The Louis D. Brown Peace Institute programs and services are grounded in the Center for Disease Control’s social-ecological framework that interventions are needed at multiple levels to interrupt cycles of violence.
