Julia Mejia | Photo courtesyDorchester resident Julia Mejia was confirmed as a Boston City Councilwoman at-large after finally winning by one vote in a recount requested by candidate Alejandra StGuillen.
Mejia is an immigrant born in the Dominical Republic. She arrived in the neighborhood of Dorchester (Boston, Massachusetts) when she was five years old and was raised by her “undocumented” single mother, according to her website. She is a Dorchester High School and Mount Ida College graduate and resides in Dorchester with her daughter, Annalise.
The new Boston Councilwoman already proclaimed her victory after the general election held on November 5th, when she got ten votes more than her closest opponent, StGuillen.
The final result was 22,492 votes to Mejia versus 22,491 votes to StGuillen.
After the recount that ended late on Monday, December 9th, 2019, StGuillen insinuated that her campaign “believe there are enough outstanding votes to sway the election if challenged in court,” but on Tuesday morning announced her decision to “not move forward with a court challenge.”
Mejia takes the seat formerly occupied by Althea Garrison, another Dorchester resident.
