Internet pioneer J. William Semich has awarded the Comunicas Foundation with the highly valuable dot.boston domain name.
“I was impressed by how well The Post’s news stories and human interest features work towards building community awareness. In hopes, it could function, in effect, as the Dorchester community’s online standard, or Dorchester’s “Digital Flag,” I decided to offer the Post the domain name DOT.BOSTON, which I had registered a while ago,” Semich stated in a letter to the Post’s editor and founder of the Comunicas Foundation, Juan Perfetti.
Among many other things, Semich is a founding member of the ICANN, founder of WorldNames, former Editor-in-Chief at Datamation Magazine, and was a public servant for a decade at the City of Boston as an Assistant to the Mayor for Tax Policy and Planning, Deputy Director of the Economic Development and Industrial Commission, Director of Financial Analysis in the Office of Fiscal Affairs and, City Auditor. After graduating from Boston University, Semich started his career working for the Boston anti-poverty program Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD) in the 1970s.
“It is an honor to receive this kind of donation from a man who is a great champion of freedom of the Internet around the globe,” Perfetti stated and invited constituents to share ideas on how dot.boston could serve the community.
