Barely 16.5% voted to elect new Boston City Councilors

The top row shows City Councilors At-Large representing Dorchester; the bottom row shows Councilors representing Dorchester’s Districts.

A renewed Boston City Council line-up was elected yesterday, November 5th, 2019, with a voter turnout of 16.49%, according to Boston Elections Department numbers.

No new faces represent Dorchester’s districts. District III repeats Councilor Frank Baker, who ran unopposed getting 4,822 votes; District IV stays with Councilor Andrea Campbell, who got 4,557 votes and defeated Jeff Durham; and District VII keeps Councilor Kim Janey, who won a slightly more contested race against Roy Owens, receiving 3,847 votes.

Three of the four newly elected City Councilors at-large were incumbents, including Dorchester native Annissa Essaibi-George, Michelle Wu, and Michael Flaherty. The only new face at the neighborhood’s City-wide representation is Julia Mejia, who is a Dot resident and takes the seat held by Althea Garrison.

Mejia won the seat with only ten more votes than candidate Alejandra St. Guillen, who requested a recount. So, that seat is still to be confirmed.

Regarding the “nonbinding public opinion advisory question” about the “renaming of Dudley Square to Nubian Square,” the result favors “nay” with 54.30%.
