Garrison, who prior ran 16th times unsuccessfully for office, formally started her post as an at-large member of the council, a seat earned automatically thanks to Pressley’s vacancy, as Garrison was first in line because she finished fifth in the 2017 City Council election.
The ceremony was attended by the City Councilors, including President Andrea Campbell, Councilor Kim Janey, and Councilor Annissa Essaibi-George, State Representatives, including Dorchester’s Liz Miranda and Russell Holmes, and diverse Massachusetts elected officials and leaders. Garrison was sworn-in by Boston Mayor Marty Walsh.

The City Council is the legislative body of the City of Boston. Councilors are elected every two years by the citizens of Boston to help constituents by connecting them to resources, services, and City departments.
