Evandro Carvalho: “we have to challenge the narrative others created that we are bad”

Evandro Carvalho was born in the countryside of the Island of Santiago, in Cape Verde, in 1981. He had an “amazing” childhood, growing up at his grandparent’s farm and playing soccer.

Dorchester Post’s editor, Juan Perfetti, sat down with Carvalho to learn more about his life growing up in the neighborhood of Dorchester, and his duties as the Massachusetts 5th Suffolk State Representative.

When he was 9 years old, his mother moved from Cape Verde to the United States of America, specifically to the neighborhood of Dorchester, in Boston.

Growing up in Dorchester, Carvalho graduated from Madison Park Technical Vocational High School. Then, he went to Umass Amherst while having his first job cleaning offices in Back Bay. At Umass, Carvalho got a degree in Sociology and Criminal Justice and African American minor studies.

After Umass, Evandro moved to Washington (DC) to study at Howard University School of Law, where he also met his current wife, Ashley, who grew up in the South.

After graduating, the Carvalhos came back to Dorchester where they established with their daughter, Eliana.

Evandro Carvalho is the Massachusetts State Representative for the 5th Suffolk District, representing over 40,000 residents of Dorchester.
